McDonald's Takes Down AI-Generated Christmas Ad Following Online Criticism.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas commercial created with Artificial Intelligence following encountering significant online backlash.
The 45-second spot was produced via AI video tools and was originally released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.
Social Media Response and Decision to Pull
Following its publication, audiences online denounced the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".
"This moment serves as an key lesson as we examine the appropriate application of Artificial Intelligence," stated a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.
The commercial was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of things that might go awry over the holidays, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".
A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads
Campaigns that include AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among prominent companies, especially for the Christmas campaign season.
- Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
- Technical Challenges: As clips made with current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be only a few seconds in length.
- Broader Implications: The video also provoked worries about job displacement in the production sector, with some observers noting it might affect opportunities for production staff.
Response from the Production Company
After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.
She stated, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then crafted during the edit "just as we would on any high-craft production".
"This wasn't an experiment," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."
Divisive Audience Sentiment
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the sentiment for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.
However, several companies have likewise faced criticism for using the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "cheap" and "uncanny".
The incident underscores the evolving discussion within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
