Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
