European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
